Commandant Amon Goeth was the SS Untersturmführer, or second lieutenant who "liquidated" the Krakow Ghetto and then was put in command of the forced labor camp at Plaszlow. As a sociopath, he had no regard for human life and makes life horrific for prisoners. At one point he shot prisoners randomly from his balcony. After the war, he was hanged for war crimes.

Oskar went about saving these Jewish people by doing the following:1.) Bribing SS officers large amounts of money in order to keep "his" workers with him. He eventually was broke by the end of the war.2.) He charmed High ranking SS officers into letting him have a factory, run by his Jews. 3.) I love that Oskar changes so much. He is truly a hero and I was so very touched by the fact that he was upset that he couldn't do more. He saved, single-handedly, hundreds of lives, and yet he was upset. The movie is amazing. We could all learn a lot about tolerance and love from this film.

I agree that the book is difficult to read. The movie is a faithful representation, so your teacher shouldn't mind if you rent and watch it. The book and the movie are about Oscar Schindler, who saved hundreds of Jews from the concentration camps during World War II. He would "purchase" Jews to work in his factory, and the list refers to the names of the people he rescued.
