The scarlet letter that Hester makes is beautifully embroidered and embellished, almost like a work of art. This surprises the people of Boston because it is almost like Hester is proud of her sin. They expected a very plain letter and are astonished that Hester, not only has embellished the letter "A" but she is also wearing a beautiful dress and her hair is not in a Puritan cap but she has allowed in to flow down her back. She is obviously thumbing her nose at the rigorous moral code of Puritan Boston. However, as she stands on the scaffold, she notices a stranger in the crowd and her expression suddenly changes. By the end of the scene, she is so upset, she needs a doctor.
