   The town gathers in the marketplace. This time it is not to punish Hester, but to install the new governor. Hester is there, as are people who will be on the ship that is taking Hester, Pearl, and Dimmesdale to Europe. Hester allows herself to dream of an end to her lonliness and isolation. But, it ends quickly. Hester learns that Chillingworth is going, as well. The ship needs a doctor, and he told them he was with Hester's party. She looks up and sees Chillingworth smirking at her.
