    Hester has committed adultery with one of the men in the town, though she will not reveal who. Since she is married, but her husband's whereabouts are unknown, and since the men with whom she committed adultery is still secret, her punishment is to stand on the scaffold for three hours and to wear a scarlet "A" on her clothing from now on.
