By Chapter 22, Hester and Arthur Dimmesdale have decided to leave the colony and to live as a family elsewhere away from prying eyes and the ignominy of the scarlet letter on Hester's clothing.  They will break free from the guilt and shame they have lived with, and start life fresh and new somewhere where no one knows them or their past.

However, all is changed when the sailor gives a message to Pearl to deliver to her mother.  Hester has made plans to leave by ship and has booked passage for herself, Arthur, and Pearl.  She means for no one to know, but somehow or another, Roger Chillingworth has learned the plan.

The message Pearl delivers to her mother via the sailor is that "the doctor will bring the gentleman and that she need only worry about herself and the child" for boarding purposes.  At once her hopes are dashed and she realizes that Chillingworth will not allow them to leave so easily.  He means to torment them all until the end of their days.
