Pearl plays with the small animals that inhabit a tidal pool and with the seaweed that is on the beach. Her mother is busy talking with Chillingworth and Pearl is left not only to play but also to make a letter "A" out of seaweed. Pearl seems to have an affinity for small animals and the green letter signifies that her "A" is a natural one. After Hester returns, Pearl asks her mother once again what the letter "A" stands for. Hester becomes so exasperated that she threatens to lock Pearl in a dark closet if she keeps asking the meaning of the scarlet letter.
