    In addition to being a mirror image of Doodle and Doodle's conflict, the death of this bird foreshadows Doodle's own death at the hands of a storm.  Also, Doodle's need to be near the ibis demonstrates his own awareness of his limitations and his feeling of isolation that he is unable - like the bird - to achieve freedom through the freedom of movement.
