The setting is that of the American South, in the summer of 1918. The depictions of the countryside and gardens are indicators of this region. There is also the mention of the hurricane season 's destructive evidence on the land, such as the trees that have been uprooted.
The scarlet ibis, an exotic bird that is not indigenous to the area, that lands in their tree, sparks the memory of Doodle's birth.

Several clues in the story point to the Southern United States as this story's setting: references to the local agrarian society, comments about local boys fighting in France, American birds and flowers used in descriptions. The ibis, a South American native bird, was blown out of its range during the storm, landing in the family's yard. It is exotic enough to be "rare," just as Doodle is.
