The novel deals with one sensitive issue—an unwed, pregnant teenager who has run away from home and has been living with her older bachelor uncle. The fact that the setting is part of the conservative southern "Bible belt," adds to the sensitivity of this social issue. However, Bridgers deals with this issue in a matter of fact, non-judgemental manner, and the reader develops an empathy for all of the characters.
