Samuel Beckett produced work in every literary genre. His first book, published in 1931, was the critical study Proust, and during the next fifteen years, Beckett published a number of essays and book reviews that have yet to be collected in book form. After struggling with an unpublished play entitled Eleuthéria in the late 1940’s, he began publication of the series of plays that are as important as his novels to his present literary reputation.
