Article abstract: Homer was an American artist who was known for his luminous watercolors and powerful oils, especially those depicting the power, moods, beauty, and menace of the sea.
Winslow Homer’s first known work of art was a small drawing of a boy lying on the ground gazing into the distance, his head resting on his arm. Entitled Adolescence (1846), it displays the proficiency one would expect from a preteen who lacks training or apparent promise. The sketch would hardly be worth even a first glance were its author not known....
