Article abstract: Native Americans generally look upon their treaties as permanent and inviolate compacts between two sovereign nations. European Americans, in contrast, have tended to consider the treaties to be temporary arrangements subject to alteration and renegotiation. This difference in perspective has been a source of much misunderstanding and bitterness.
