Article abstract: Military significance: Conquered Baltic provinces, in particular East Prussia which, together with Brandenburg, formed the nucleus of the Prussian state.
The Teutonic Knights were founded in 1190 during the Third Crusade. In 1226, the Polish duke of Masovia called the order into the Baltic region to christianize the heathen Prussians. In a series of wars (1229-1280), the Prussians were forcibly converted and subdued, towns were founded, and German settlers brought in.
