Background

Pitting the non-Muslim, non-Arab people of the south against the Muslim Arab northerners, the Sudanese Civil War is one of the world’s longest-lasting conflicts. It began in 1955 with a rebellion of a unit of the Equatorial Corps stationed in Torit, but its roots go back to the nineteenth century Nilotic slave trade, British colonial rule (1898-1956), and the policies of successive governments of post-colonial Sudan.
