After Napoleon Bonaparte replaced the Spanish royal family and made his brother Joseph king in May, 1808, riots broke out throughout Spain, initiating a bitter struggle against French occupation that lasted until 1814. Saragossa became a center of resistance. It first came under siege by French forces under General Jean-Antoine Verdier in June, 1808.
