Article abstract: Type of action: Siege in the Peninsular War. Result: British and allied victory over the French.
On April 6, 1812, British forces under the command of the duke of Wellington stormed and seized the fortress city of Badajoz, defended by French troops under General Philippon. The assault was preceded by more than two weeks of skirmishing, attacks on outlying French positions, and artillery barrages of the city defenses. The entire French garrison was killed, wounded, or taken prisoner, and the British suffered a similar number of casualties....
