The Shasta people lived around the area of Mt. Shasta in Siskiyou County, Northern California. The Shasta people recognize four groupings: the Klamath River people (Wiruwhitsu), the Scott Valley people (Irvaitsu), the Shasta Valley people (Ahotireitsu), and the Rogue River people (from Southern Oregon, Ikirukatsu). There are headmen of each of the four groups, but the head of the Oregon group is recognized as the leader overall, and he is often sent for in matters of great urgency.
