Article abstract: Earthen mounds, whether effigy mounds {$IEffigy mounds{/I}} , burial mounds, or temple mounds, are especially prevalent in North America from western New York State through the Great Lakes region and down the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys to the Southeast.
