Article abstract: Coubertin was the driving force behind the revival of the Olympic Games on an international scale. Through his efforts, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established in 1894, and the first modern international Olympics were held in Athens in 1896; he also oversaw the difficult formative years of the Games until they reached maturity and success.
