Article abstract: Rose broke Ty Cobb’s major league baseball record of 4,191 hits in 1985 and established a new record of 4,256 hits by the time he retired in 1986. He lost an assured place in baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1989 when he was banned from the sport for allegedly betting on baseball games.
