Article abstract: At issue: Integrity of Persia and the contest for Herat. Result: The independence of Afghanistan and the division of Khorāsān.
By 1700, the Safavid rulers of Persia faced revolts in several regions of their empire. In 1708, Mīr Wais Khan asserted the independence of Kandahar and resisted Persian invasions. In 1711, a Persian-Georgian force under Khusro Khan was crushed by the Afghans. After another Persian army met defeat, Mīr Wais was chosen king by all the Afghans except the Abdālīs from Herat.
