Summary of Event

On March 4, 1681, King Charles II of Great Britain granted to William Penn a charter creating the colony of Pennsylvania. Named after his father, Sir William Penn, an admiral who had aided Charles’s accession, Penn received the charter in payment of a debt of sixteen thousand pounds sterling that the king owed to him.
