Article abstract: Pope Paul III was the last of the Renaissance popes, aristocratic, educated in the classics, with the concerns of his family often paramount. Yet he was also the first pope of the Catholic or Counter-Reformation, and it was he who summoned the Council of Trent, whose decisions governed the Church in subsequent centuries.
