Article abstract: Military significance: Hill served as divisional and corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia throughout the American Civil War.
After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1847, A. P. Hill served in the Seminole (1835-1843) and Mexican-American Wars (1846-1848). In March, 1861, when the American Civil War (1861-1865) broke out, he resigned from the U.S. Army to join the Confederacy. He led the Thirteenth Virginia Volunteers at First Bull Run in 1861.
