After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1847, A. P. Hill served in the Seminole (1835-1843) and Mexican-American Wars (1846-1848). In March, 1861, when the American Civil War (1861-1865) broke out, he resigned from the U.S. Army to join the Confederacy. He led the Thirteenth Virginia Volunteers at First Bull Run in 1861.
