Article abstract: Military significance: The Ostrogoths conquered Italy from the general Odoacer, who himself had overthrown the last Roman emperor in the west. After consolidating their own kingdom, the Ostrogoths fought hard against the resurgent Eastern Roman Empire before succumbing at the Battle of Mons Lactarius (553).
