Article abstract: Azikiwe is the father of modern Nigerian nationalism and the leader of Nigeria’s independence struggle. He became the first president of the Republic of Nigeria in 1963 and retained that position until ousted during the 1966 coup. He also founded the University of Nigeria at Nsukka and was its first chancellor.
