The collection of teachings that became the doctrine of the Native American Church had their beginnings in the 1880’s, probably among the Kiowas and Comanches living in Oklahoma. The church emphasizes the brotherhood of all American Indians. Among the main themes of the church’s ethical code are mutual aid among members, a strong family, self-reliance, and the avoidance of alcohol.
