Article abstract: The Muskogean language family, the only linguistic family lying exclusively in the Southeast, is divided into eastern and western branches. The eastern branch includes Alabama and Coushatta (Koasati), Hitchiti-Miccosukee, and Creek-Seminole. The western branch consists of Choctaw-Chickasaw.
