Muhammad ʿAlī Pasha

Article abstract: By applying strong-arm techniques so as to assure central-government control, Muhammad transformed Egypt from its eighteenth century status as an ungovernable and unproductive province of the Ottoman Empire into a largely autonomous state supported by an impressive military apparatus. That was done by combining Ottoman “new order” reform priorities with European technical contributions, especially in the areas of military and agricultural modernization.
