Historically, the Blackfoot people lived throughout the region between Canada's North Saskatchewan River and the headwaters of the Missouri River in what is now Montana. The tribe numbered about 9,100 members during the mid-nineteenth century—a figure that would be significantly reduced by epidemics of smallpox and measles during the next decade.
