The Montagnais have resided north of the St. Lawrence River on the Labrador Peninsula since before Europeans arrived in North America. Living to their southwest is a culturally and linguistically related but distinct group, the Attikamek, who were decimated by smallpox and Iroquois warriors late in the seventeenth century and seem to have been confused with the TĂȘte de Boule until the 1970's, when the Attikamek name was revived concurrent with rising Attikamek political awareness.
