Article abstract: Military significance: Stretching from Iran to Egypt and from Babylonia to Anatolia and the Mediterranean Sea, the Assyrian Empire was the world’s largest polity during its formative period.

During the early period (c. 2100-1700 b.c.e.), Assyria’s kings were interested in mercantile activity, as the kingdom lay along the trade routes that brought precious metals and ores from Central Asia to Anatolia. When this trading relationship ended, Assyria lapsed into relative obscurity, and was subject to conquest by outsiders.
