Between 900 and 1150 c.e., a widespread and sophisticated culture evolved within the San Juan Basin of northern New Mexico and southwestern Colorado. Archaeologists designated it the “Chaco Phenomenon,” characterized by at least nine major pueblos, each of several hundred rooms, in addition to several hundred smaller ten-to-twenty-room pueblos. These centered on Anasazi peoples of the Chaco Canyon in northern New Mexico, who created a regional administrative and exchange system linked to outlying pueblos.
