Mary Ross was born in Park Hill, which had served as the intellectual center of the Cherokee Nation until it became a part of the state of Oklahoma in 1907. Ross's great-great-grandfather, John Ross, served as the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation during the “Trail of Tears” and the redevelopment of the Cherokee Republic in the nineteenth century.
