Lucas Cranach, the Elder

Article abstract: Cranach established an individual decorative style of paintings, drawings, and prints during his fifty-year career at the court of Wittenberg. A personal friend of Martin Luther, Cranach was one of the first German artists to incorporate elements of early Reformation theology into his pictures. His numerous examples of mythological subjects and portraits can be related to Humanist scholars at the University of Wittenberg and to erudite tastes of the Saxon court.
