Article abstract: Leo XIII, considered to be one of the greatest leaders of the Roman Catholic church during a period of crisis, tried to maintain the strength and power of the Church in a world changing through industry, colonization, and governmental upheaval. The fact that he was not always successful is not as significant as the fact that he was a pioneer, aware of the needs of the modern Roman Catholic church.
