Article abstract: Leo IX was one of the most important of the medieval popes. Coming to the Papacy after a long period of papal and religious decline, and during an era when the authority of the Holy Roman Emperors was at its most influential, Leo instituted a number of significant reforms within the Church which had profound results not only for the Roman church in the West and the Orthodox church in the East but also for the Holy Roman Empire and other kingdoms in Europe.
