Koster is one of the most intensively investigated sites in the midwestern United States. Excavations conducted under the direction of archaeologist Stuart Streuver revealed thirteen sequential strata dating from the Early Archaic through the Mississippian traditions. A seasonally occupied hamlet was established around 6400 b.c.e. Deer, freshwater mussels, and other foods were cooked in hearths, and grinding stones were used to process wild seeds.
