Article abstract: Julius II, the Warrior Pope, was the first and only pontiff personally to command and lead a papal army into battle. His military exploits regained large amounts of territory lost to the Papal States in wars with France and small Italian republics. Besides his attempts to strengthen church administration and reduce nepotism, he was also a patron to Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donato Bramante.
