Article abstract: In lifting the Turkish siege of Vienna, Sobieski halted the Ottoman conquest of Europe, preserving Western culture and Christendom. The status of women, in particular, differs so profoundly in Christian societies from that in Islamic societies that the debt of Western women to Sobieski’s generalship can hardly be overstated.
