For most Israeli men and women, service in the military is mandatory at the age of eighteen following high school. Men usually serve for three years, women for two. After active service, the conscript returns to civilian life but remains in the reserves until age fifty-five for men and thirty-four for women. Unless activated because of an emergency, reservists participate in a refresher course for one month each year.
