Background

In late 1972, Egyptian president Anwar el-Sadat decided to fight Israel and break the diplomatic deadlock over Arab territories that Israel occupied. Syrian president Hafez al-Assad also agreed to fight and thus force Israel into a two-front war. Arab plans were extensive, secret, and assisted by Israel’s belief that the Arabs would not attack because of their military deficiencies.
