Article abstract: Originally entitled Da Xue (c. end of first century b.c.e.; English translation, 1861), The Great Learning is one of the Four Books of Confucianism, the philosophy's primary texts. Though neglected for more than a millennium after its initial composition, it has served since the twelfth century as a primer to Confucian thought.
