A Virginian by birth, George H. Thomas cast his fortune with the Union during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1836, Congressman John Young Mason appointed Thomas to West Point. He graduated twelfth in the class of 1840 behind William T. Sherman, who finished sixth.

Thomas entered the artillery service and saw action against the Seminole (1835-1843) in Florida and during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848)....
