Article abstract: Blücher served the cause of Prussia well throughout his life, especially during the French revolutionary and Napoleonic periods. Although he was not a great strategist, his considerable and undisputed ability as a leader of men and his strong support for military reforms following defeat at Jena in 1806 enabled Prussia to play a major role in the final victory over France, thereby contributing to Prussia’s subsequent rise as a major power.
