Article abstract: Military significance: The Foreign Legion helped maintain order wherever French interests were threatened or wherever the unit’s skills were requested.

On March 10, 1831, King Louis Philippe of France created the French Foreign Legion to serve in Algeria. This unit of the French army, which consisted of foreign volunteers, was initially meant to maintain order in French possessions overseas; however, it came to be sent to any locale where its services were needed.
