The Central American country of Panama has had a rocky political history. It has had its share of coups and rigged elections. In 1968, for example, General Omar Torrijos took power in a coup against Arnulfo Arias, who had been democratically elected. Torrijos ruled the country until he was killed in a plane crash in 1981.
