The son of the town constable, Francis Joseph Lefebvre joined the French Guards at the age of seventeen. By 1788, he had risen to first sergeant and entered the National Guards in 1789. Promoted to general of the brigade, he fought with great bravery at Fleurus (1794), where his troops beat back three Austrian attacks led by Prince Charles.
