Article abstract: Iroquois tribes cede lands to the United States and are forced to move westward.
The Treaty of Fort Stanwix, signed in 1784, was a product of the American Revolution that involved colonists and the Iroquois nations. Because several Iroquois tribes had fought alongside the British during the war, victorious Americans maintained that they had won lands occupied by “defeated” Iroquois.
